How to Cook the Perfect Egg

Ah, the humble egg. Cooked properly they’re fluffy and delicious. Cooked incorrectly and they turn out limp, and rubbery. The ultimate challenge is cooking the perfect egg whether it may be fried, scrambled or poached. It’s not as easy as it looks. Today we show you the basics of eggs and offer some unique ways of serving up these eggs that go beyond eggs, toast and bacon.

But wait! What about cholesterol? Should I be limiting my egg yolk intake? Research has shown that while yolks are high cholesterol, they can be included into a healthy eating plan. In the 1970s, research attributed incorrectly that high-cholesterol foods were the culprit behind raising blood cholesterol, but in reality, food high in saturated or trans fat is mainly responsible. According to Heart and Stroke Canada, a healthy person without high blood cholesterol, diabetes or a history of heart disease can eat an egg a day without increasing their long term risk of getting heart disease.

How do you like your eggs? Whether you like your eggs sunny side up or over easy, frying an egg doesn’t have to be hard.

Perfect Fried Egg

Heat a pan over medium heat and add in oil. Crack your egg into the pan and let it sit, gently poke the egg-white sac to release the whites, tilting the pan to distribute them. Cook until the whites are set. If you’re cooking the eggs over easy, gently flip the with the help of a spatula to cook the other side.

 

Scrambled Egg Recipes

Who doesn’t like a good scrambled egg? Adults and kids alike, love them for their ease and deliciousness. The perfect fluffy and soft scrambled egg comes as a result of beating air into the egg. The more air that is whisked into the egg, the fluffier it will turn out.

Perfect Scrambled Egg

Crack your eggs into a bowl and season with salt, pepper and milk. Whisk vigorously until combined. Meanwhile, heat a pan over medium heat and add in butter. Once the butter melts, pour in the egg mixture. As eggs begin to set, gently move your spatula across the bottom and side of the pan. Continually move the eggs until they’re set.

Poached Egg Recipes

Most home cooks run far away from poached eggs thinking they’re difficult to make, but with a little practice, you can become a poached egg pro in no time.

Perfect Poached Egg

To poach your eggs, crack an egg into a bowl or small cup. Bring your water to a boil and add in some vinegar. Turn the heat down so that the water is simmering. Crack your egg into a cup or a small bowl. Gently lower the cup or bowl into the water and drop the egg in.

 

Hard or Soft Boiled Eggs

 


Hard boiled eggs are great for snacks and on the go breakfasts, but leave them in the water for too long and you can overcook them into a mushy mess. When striving for the perfect soft boiled egg timing is everything. Too little and your whites won’t cook, too long and you don’t get the oozing yolk.

Perfect HardBoiledEggs

To make the perfect hard boiled egg, put your egg into a pot with cold water over medium heat and cover. Once the water comes to a boil, remove the pot from the heat and let it stand for 12 minutes. Remove the egg from the hot water and run it under cold water to stop the cooking process.

If you’re making a soif boiled egg, let it stand for 3 to 4 minutes and serve immediately.

BONUS: What’s the difference between poached eggs and a soft boiled egg? Once cooked and with the yolk broken they can look fairly similar. The difference is how they’re cooked. Soft boiled eggs are cooked with their shells on and then peeled, whereas poached eggs are cooked without their shells, which can be tricky for some.
